Cheesy Gift Guide From The House Mouse Part 4 – Cheese Knives & Boards

Mice Cheese Knife Set from first Christmas with The Hubby's family

Mice Cheese Knife Set from first Christmas with The Hubby’s family

My very first Christmas with The Hubby and his family, I received a bunch of cheese-centric gifts from just about everyone and was touched by their thoughtfulness. I loved each item and the person who took the time and care to find them for me. It had nothing to do with how much they cost, or where they came from, it was all about the heart and love that went into the gift. I was the new girl, the crazy cheese-loving stranger in their home who they didn’t know from anyone, yet they knew one thing: I loved cheese. And they love cheese too, which made finding gifts a bit easier. So what is an easy gift for that cheese lover on the list? The one thing no fromage freak can ever have too much of? Cheese knives and boards! I know it’s getting late for Christmas shopping and the weather outside is pretty darn frightful, but these suggestions are easy and probably available right in that neighborhood gift shop you’ve walked by a dozen or so times and never stopped in. Well, why not stop in today? Continue reading

A Cheesy Confession

Me when I was younger_0012

Me with a busted arm when I was 10, but you get the point.

This has probably been the hardest post I have ever written since I began writing The House Mouse back in 2009. All the starts and stops, the interruptions and scrapped drafts, the frustrations and not knowing what to say have nearly driven me mad. I mean, I started this post back in May! I finally decided to just stop dancing around and come clean about why I’ve been so silent. This is really hard to say…
I, The House Mouse, am having a hard time eating cheese.  Just writing the words makes me so sad and sick to my stomach both literally and figuratively! I have rebelled against my body for so long and it finally caught up with me in pretty dramatic form. Continue reading

Cheesy Etsy Find #2: Proud Poutine

Poutine Kit - Make your own cheese curds. Gravy included.
About five years ago, my boyfriend and I went to Stratford, Ontario for the Shakespeare Festival to get some culture. While strolling the cobblestone streets one evening, we came across a tiny shop called Boomers with a huge line outside. Curious, we asked someone what was going on. “Poutine!” was all they said. I had no clue what this guy was talking about, but my boyfriend got really excited and hopped in line. He explained that poutine, which is Acadian slang for mushy mess,  is a French-Canadian treat made of cheese curds, french fries and gravy, which sounded both really amazing and terribly frightening. He ordered the goat cheese poutine with cracked pepper and basil oil and pestered me until I took a taste. Not being a huge cheese curd fan (the squeak gives me the creeps) I was sure I wouldn’t like it. Oh, how wrong I was. Hot, rich, salty, starchy, slightly sweet from the basil, I was hooked. But barring crossing the border to get this fabulous treat, what can we Americans do? Etsy seller Ella Kinloch has brought us the answer by way of Proud Poutine

Cheesy Etsy Find No. 1

1 Cheese Slicer made by blacksmith. Hand forged in USA. Great wedding gift or dinner party gift.
Hello. My name is Robin and I am an Etsy Addict. I am completely obsessed with this online art-fest/garage sale/flea market/art lover’s Nirvana. Never heard of Etsy before? Allow me to enlighten you, and remember, the first taste is free. Etsy.com is an website where artists from all over post their wares and sell them. Touted as the “World’s most vibrant handmade marketplace,” one can find anything from wire-wrapped resin pendants to tables with unfinished trees for bases. Either browse at random or type in a keyword for what interests you. One of my favorite keywords is “cheese”… obviously. I have found some pretty cool, interesting, and sometimes disturbing items available on Etsy having to do with cheese, so I thought I would share a new one with you periodically.
This week, we’ll start off simple and elegant with a hand-forged cheese slicer from WatkinsForge. Blacksmith Jason Watkins of Hattiesburg, MS has created this beautiful slicer from twisted steel and then finished it with beeswax. I love how simple, yet interesting the bow-shaped handle is, and the substantial wire looks sturdy enough to slice even the densest of cheeses, like Roomano or an aged Gouda.
Check out the rest of Mr. Watkins’ wares here and check back next week for another Cheesy Etsy Find!
Stay Cheesy!
