My very first Christmas with The Hubby and his family, I received a bunch of cheese-centric gifts from just about everyone and was touched by their thoughtfulness. I loved each item and the person who took the time and care to find them for me. It had nothing to do with how much they cost, or where they came from, it was all about the heart and love that went into the gift. I was the new girl, the crazy cheese-loving stranger in their home who they didn’t know from anyone, yet they knew one thing: I loved cheese. And they love cheese too, which made finding gifts a bit easier. So what is an easy gift for that cheese lover on the list? The one thing no fromage freak can ever have too much of? Cheese knives and boards! I know it’s getting late for Christmas shopping and the weather outside is pretty darn frightful, but these suggestions are easy and probably available right in that neighborhood gift shop you’ve walked by a dozen or so times and never stopped in. Well, why not stop in today? Continue reading

It’s December 15th, which means ten days until Christmas (it also means Psych: the Musical is on tonight at 9pm on the USA Network, but that’s a whole different kind of cheese and I digress) so shopping for that cheese lover just kicked in to overdrive. Have no fear, because The House Mouse is here with Cheesy Gift Guide #3 which has some pretty cool gadgets. As most readers know, I prefer to shop local, keeping dollars within the community, however time is of the essence so I will be including prices and links here to sites that have expedited shipping, although I make no promises for holiday miracles. Should timing become an issue, I suggest a House Mouse tradition of placing a picture of the gift inside a box and then putting that box inside another box and so on and so on and so on. Include a note letting the recipient know their gift is en route to their home, which may be appreciated even more if the gadget is particularly large or heavy. And away we go!
My parents were big java drinkers and getting freshly ground coffee in the 70’s in our neighborhood meant going to Cheese World. The combined smell when we walked in the door of the ground beans and the sweet cheese always tantalized my taste buds. I couldn’t wait to be old enough to put the flavors together and see if my fantasy was as good as reality. It seems I was not alone in this fantasy world since not one, but TWO cheese makers created a coffee and cheese combination. So, who are these dream cheese-weavers and how do they stack up to the cozy fantasy? Part 1-Barely Buzzed! Continue reading
Since I am not a chef (or even decent cook, for that matter) my contribution to the holiday festivities is that I always bring the cheese board. While this may seem like a cop-out of a task, it’s not easy finding complimentary cheeses that will please all palates. Milk types, pate color and flavor intensity all come into play when making selections.
This Independence Day, I went with a fully represented board of the four top milk choices: cow, sheep, goat, and even buffalo. While all the selections were hits, the goat’s milk La Clochette was the clear winner of the bunch. Continue reading
