This has probably been the hardest post I have ever written since I began writing The House Mouse back in 2009. All the starts and stops, the interruptions and scrapped drafts, the frustrations and not knowing what to say have nearly driven me mad. I mean, I started this post back in May! I finally decided to just stop dancing around and come clean about why I’ve been so silent. This is really hard to say…
I, The House Mouse, am having a hard time eating cheese. Just writing the words makes me so sad and sick to my stomach both literally and figuratively! I have rebelled against my body for so long and it finally caught up with me in pretty dramatic form.
For those who have been reading The House Mouse since the beginning know, my diet as a child pretty much consisted of cheese and little else. It was not until I was in my thirties that I began to broaden my palate to fruits and veggies and I even began to dabble in cooking, probably because it allowed me to incorporate cheese with the new foods I was eating. Still, my favorite way to feast on fromage was in its purest form. My purchases from Zingerman’s, Murray’s Cheese Shop, and Artisanal Premium Cheese, were beyond excessive and expensive, but I was obsessed and could not help myself whenever I saw or tasted something new. Then, in April, I was hit with a pain so intense I thought someone was stabbing me from inside my belly. I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, but this was beyond tolerable so I headed right to the emergency room. Seven months, forty-five pounds, multiple tests and procedures later, the pain is marginally better, but at a dear cost. I have all but given up my daily dose of cheese. Actually, anything I eat makes me feel pretty awful, but cheese on a regular basis brings me a world of hurt. The how and the why are still up for debate so I hesitate to even begin that whole discussion. Right now I am choosing to blame my over indulgence and leave it at that.
Unfortunately, it has meant that I have not been motivated to tasting or writing as I once was. Writing The House Mouse has been so much fun and I have learned a great deal over the years from my fellow bloggers, It’s Not You, It’s Brie, The Cheesemonger, and Cheese and Champagne. It has also allowed me to meet writers I look up to like Gordon Edgar, Josh Kilmer-Purcell, Max McCalman, and Laura Werlin. Now that I am convalescing, I am hoping I can get back into the swing of things. Even though I won’t be able to gorge myself any longer, there is still so much out there to talk about. New books coming out from the ladies from Cowgirl Creamery, fun DIY cheese kits on Etsy, even funky cheese-flavored crackers from John Wm. Macy’s.
