Queseria Bendita dairy has recalled three of its soft cheeses due to Listeria contamination. The bacteria-laced cheese caused at least two pregnant women to become ill and induced premature labor. Mothers and babies appear to be on the mend however long-term effects are yet to be determined. The Yakima, WA dairy has been quick to acknowledge the contamination and alert the public, recalling its Queso Fresco, Requeson, and Panela sold in Hispanic groceries throughout Washington and Oregon.
Listeria is a bacteria that causes listeriosis, an infection that mainly affects older people, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea.
